Charlie Hieronymus Pace by Arinen Charlie Hieronymus Pace by Arinen
The famous picture of Dom Monaghan adjusting his cybernetic eye implant. Ahh, things were never the same since his battle with the nanobot swarm. I tell you, the tiniest bit of dust in that thing, and your vision is screwed until you can get it properly cleaned out. But it does double as a telescope, which does come in awful handy, so there are some upsides...

This picture has an interestingish story behind it, so sit down and get comfy, kiddlies...

I felt like doing a sharpie picture (which I did and will upload when I can scan it), so I was looking up pictures of Dom Monaghan for one, when I stumbled upon a self portrait he had done - turns out he is pretty damn good at photography. Anyway, I saw it and knew I had to draw it, but sharpie just wouldn't do it justice. Nor would I be happy to leave the background white, and I knew that trying to colour it in would ruin it.

Then, I had a brilliant idea. I changed the original picture to grayscale, then inverted the colours. I now had the basic equivalent of a photo negative, which became my reference picture. So, I began to draw the picture on white paper, intending to invert the colours back when I scanned/photographed it and put it on the computer.

After drawing the ring, I realised the letters didn't look right and couldn't figure out why. Then I remembered, this was a self portrait and he took the photo in the mirror (duh :iconfacepalmplz:). So, I decided I would just flip it while I was inverting colours. The original image before I did all that is here: [link]

So there we go. That is how this picture came into existence. It turned out so much better than I had hoped, and goshdarnit, I may just use this technique again.

EDIT: I changed the contrast as well, because frankly the photo was crap.

Thanks :D Make sure you check out the original (the link in the comments)

Those darker areas I actually rubbed back with an eraser, which works great for highlights in normal images as well, which is how the beard and cuts came about :D

The grid technique doesn't work for me. I'll finish one and will be too lazy to do the others. XD But I'll say it again; Dear god I want your realism skills. ;o;

Oh, I see, that kinda makes sense. What I do is use the grid technique for the lineart, then then rub it out and eyeball the shading.

Oooh, wow. As I said yesterday, what an awesome, cheaty technique, I love it. :) Lovely lighting, and of course, you get extra points simply for it being Dom Monaghan. :D

Haha, I remember when they were shooting the movies and there were all these rumours that Dom and Billy or Dom and Elijah were gay couples and they pretended it was true for laughs :XD:
